A loose wheel in the carriageway caused delays for drivers on the M27 today.

Highways England said the incident had led to lane closures on the westbound section of the motorway between junctions J12 for Portsmouth and J11 for Fareham.

Police were called to the scene and the wheel was removed to the hard shoulder.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokeswoman said it was unclear where the wheel had come from, but it was reported to have hit two cars, which were able to carry on.

The problem was reported just before 8am.

And in a separate incident, one lane of the M27 was closed eastbound between Junctions 9-10 (Sedgensworth-Wickham) after an accident at 8.10am.
