A MAN died after being hit by a train tonight.

The man was hit by a train close to the Whyke Road level crossing in Chichester at about 9.35pm.

The train was the Southern Bognor to Portsmouth service.

Police and paramedics were called and the man was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 10pm.

Two ambulances and a rapid response car were sent by South East Coast Ambulance service.

A spokesman said: ‘We were called to a level crossing to reports of a person being struck by a train.’

The man has not yet been identified by police.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: ‘It’s a non-suspicious fatality.

‘We have interviewed the train driver.’

Delays of up to an hour affected journeys between Barnham and Havant as police closed the line to investigate. Replacement buses were laid on.
