ROADWORKS and accidents caused long tailbacks getting out of the city and on the motorway for a second day running.

People trying to leave Portsmouth yesterday morning were delayed by gas works on Western Road, North Harbour, which led to a road closure and a diversion.

An incident on Rudmore Roundabout meant motorists were prevented from getting on to the M275 and several accidents on the M27 caused tailbacks in both directions.

Two people were taken to hospital after a crash on the M27 involving a lorry at 8.30am, near the Junction 9 westbound exit for Whiteley.

On the A3(M) at Junction 3 a car also crashed into a barrier.

People took to Twitter to express their frustrations.

Luke @bigluca84 tweeted: ‘Getting out of Gosport took me nearly an hour. Heavy traffic also from Fareham to Portsmouth M27 and Chichester roundabout A27.’

Peter Stokes @ptid1976 said: ‘Taken 20 mins to get nowhere near Rudmore Roundabout from Copnor. Not loving the council’s road layouts.’

Emma Judd @Emma_Judd_ tweeted: ‘Traffic’s a mess for anyone trying to get on the M275 at Rudmore. Which is nice.’
