BUS users will be able to keep on using a popular route after First bus withdrew the service.

Hampshire-based Xelabus agreed to step in and pick up part of the axed 57 service after being contacted by local councillor Geoff Fazackarley.

The new X57 runs from Fareham rail station, through Linden Lea, to Portchester, North Harbour, QA Hospital and Cosham.

Aileen Ash, of Linden Lea, said: ‘I’m 94 and it’s too far for me to walk to the shops from her, so it was awful when I heard the bus was being withdrawn, but it’s great to have this service.’

Merle Bartlett of Jute Close added: ‘This bus service is so handy, and we’ve got a lot of older people around here who can’t get around without the buses.’

Garry Kneller, general manager of Xelabus, said: ‘It’s all about being part of the community.’
