HOVERTRAVEL has announced it has ordered two new vessels to carry passengers on its Portsmouth to Ryde route.

The final designs of the craft are still being finalised, but they are expected to take over the popular route from 2015 and will carry between 85 and 95 passengers each.

The firm is also aiming to increase the frequency of its services and maintain its position as the fastest ferry operator in Europe.

The firm’s managing director, Neil Chapman, said: ‘Our two new craft will be the first of a new model of hovercraft to be manufactured.

‘We are working closely with the award-winning Griffon Hoverwork to identify and specify the exact details for the Hovertravel craft whilst they continue to develop the design of the overall model.

‘It is exciting to be involved in a project which will see not just the world’s newest hovercraft serving our customers but also to know that our input will inform the design of passenger hovercraft around the globe.’

Hovertravel currently has two hovercraft providing up to 70 services per day.
