WE may be basking in sunshine – but council leaders are already preparing for snow.

West Sussex County Council has a new fleet of 26 improved gritters, which need less salt to provide the same thawing effect.

Councillor Pieter Montyn, who heads highways in West Sussex, said: ‘Operation Snowflake saw the new gritting vehicles, snow ploughs and other equipment tested on a “dry run” across West Sussex.

‘A real benefit of the new vehicles will be that because they are more efficient they will actually use 20 per cent less salt, meaning our supplies will last for longer and there will be less of an effect on the environment.’

The new gritters are also equipped with a Global Positioning Satellite System called ‘Coldsnap’ which makes it possible to monitor gritting throughout the county minute by minute.
