THE new tunnel at Hindhead may not be open during the first two weeks of July, as hoped.
Highways Agency staff told The News recently that it was hoped all the safety checks would be completed in time for the A3 tunnel to be opened before the middle of this month.
But the agency is still not committing itself to a specific opening date.
A spokesman said: ‘The sign-off date for the whole project is the middle of August.
‘We’re still looking at some time in July for the opening.
‘The last safety checks are still being carried out on the road.
‘We are still ahead of schedule.’
Signs on the approach to the 1.9km tunnel still say it will be opening some time this month.
Resurfacing works were also taking place this week, with overnight closures and diversions in place.
The roadworks have been carried out during the past three years, and will reduce journey times between Portsmouth and London.
