FERRY company Brittany Ferries has launched a new no-frills car ferry service linking Portsmouth to Le Havre in Normandy and Santander in northern Spain.

Branded Brittany Ferries économie, it is aimed at customers who wish to travel to France or Spain at a reasonable fare without the cruise-style experience normally provided by Brittany.

The service, which will use the ferry Etretat, was launched yesterday. It comprises a daytime sailing from Portsmouth to Le Havre and an overnight sailing from Le Havre to Portsmouth each Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

The ship has 13 pet-friendly cabins which allow dogs to travel with their owners - the only ferry between the UK and France to offer this feature.

Mike Bevens, group commercial director, said ‘We began operating from Portsmouth to Santander in 2009 and to Le Havre in 2013, and both routes have proved popular with customers.

‘Etretat allows us to build on that success by offering them more capacity, a wider range of sailing times, and, thanks to the économie concept – even greater value.’
