AN ELDERLY man has died after being knocked down by a car in Gosport.

The 87-year-old was hit by a Ford Focus outside the Clarence Wharf Industrial Estate on Mumby Road at 8.17am today.

The man suffered a serious head injury and was taken to the Queen Alexandra Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the Ford Focus, a 36-year-old woman from Gosport, was shaken but otherwise uninjured.

She was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and remains in custody.

Officers from Hampshire Constabulary’s Fratton Roads Policing unit are appealing for witnesses.

They are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or saw either the vehicle or the pedestrian prior to it to call 101 quoting Operation Dusted.
