Plane crashes and overturns on the Isle of Wight

A SMALL plane has crashed on the Isle of Wight.

The emergency unfurled on the island’s airport, at Bembridge, at around 11.30am.

Witnesses reported seeing the single-engine aircraft overturn onto its roof in the middle of the airfield while attempting to land.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service attended with a rescue tender, foam salvage tender and three appliances. Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service were also called to the scene.

Isle of Wight NHS said one ambulance attended.

However, although the occupants were in shock, they did not require hospital treatment.

Fire crews are still understood to be at the scene.

The Air Accident Investigation Board has been informed and the airport’s runway has been closed.
