A ROAD safety awareness campaign is under way because motorists are ignoring lane closure signs in the Hindhead Tunnel.

Parts of the tunnel on the A3 – which links Portsmouth to London – have had to be closed for maintenance recently but drivers are still trying to drive through lanes which have a sign displaying a red cross.

Surrey Police say 100 motorists in an hour were spotted disobeying the restrictions recently, and a few have been prosecuted as a result.
