Police say the victim of a fatal rail accident was a 25-year-old man from Tangmere near Chichester.

He died after being struck by a train at a crossing in Oving shortly after 2pm yesterday.

British Transport Police had officers at the Woodhorn Lane level crossing following the incident. A spokesman said: “I can confirm the man who died at Oving on Wednesday was a 25-year-old from Tangmere. His family has been informed.

“Colleagues from South East Coast Ambulance Service and Sussex Police also attended, where they discovered a body of a man at the scene.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious.

“We will prepare a file for the coroner.”

All trains were cancelled between Chichester and Barnham, with replacement buses running between Barnham and Havant.
