A TECHNICAL fault forced the hovercraft between Southsea and Ryde out of service yesterday.

A Hovertravel spokesman said the crew noticed a problem with the craft’s equipment at 9.30am and took it out of service.

The firm now only has one vessel, Island Express, servicing the cross-Solent link because its second hovercraft, Freedom 90, is undergoing an overhaul.

Hovertravel managing director Neil Chapman said passengers were able to use the Wightlink catamaran at no extra cost.

Mr Chapman said: ‘With regard to the service cancellation, we have put several measures in place to help our customers.’

Passengers are also able to claim free travel because of the delay. More details are available online at hovertravel.co.uk.
