A REDUCED train timetable for the Christmas period is being brought in as lines around London Waterloo undergo major engineering works.

Today, a Saturday service was running, with a reduced service between London Waterloo and Portsmouth.

Services to Portsmouth via Eastleigh will only run between Basingstoke and Portsmouth Harbour.

Over the weekend, around half of London Waterloo station and some of the lines between Waterloo and Vauxhall will be closed all day Saturday, which will affect services from the south.

On New Year’s Day, the train operator will be running a Sunday service.

The programme of work carried out over Christmas will include the replacement of switches and crossings which are more than 30
years old and are used to control train movements
into the busiest part of Waterloo.

The work will affect platforms one to nine which will be out of use while the track work takes place.

South West Trains is advising customers to plan ahead before using the railway between Christmas and the new year.
