WORKMEN caused traffic jams as they dug up a large section of road to carry out works to underground sewers.

The works took place all day yesterday on the junction of Brookers Lane and Wych Lane, in Gosport.

Workmen dug up the road to reach the sewer below and carry out maintenances repairs.

Large tankers, three of which were parked along Forest Way, had been drafted in for the day so that services were unaffected.

A spokesperson for Southern Water said: ‘We are carrying out planned maintenance work on a sewer in Brookers Lane in Gosport.

‘While this section of the sewer network is out of action we are using tankers to transport wastewater flows for treatment.

‘We aim to complete the work by this morning.’
