PASSENGERS on board a ship watched on as its crew helped rescue a windsurfer.

Eagle-eyed Robin Wall, chief officer of Paddle Steamer Waverley spotted the windsurfer in distress on Saturday.

The captain of the ship called the coastguard and then stayed in the area.

The ship had been approaching Ventnor, on the Isle of Wight.

A canoeist and a fishing boat responded to the mayday call and helped the stricken windsurfer back to the safety of land.

The person has since made a donation to Waverley Steam Navigation.

Andy O’Brian, Waverley’s Captain said: ‘It is not often that they get to take part in a rescue mission.

‘We were glad that we were able to help and that the windsurfer was returned home safely.’
