THE 10th anniversary of free bus passes for pensioners was celebrated with a bottle of champagne.

Nell Leaver, 90, is one of the oldest users of Portsmouth City Council’s free bus pass and was presented with the gift by Councillor Frank Jonas, Lord Mayor of Portsmouth

The celebration was organised by Portsmouth Pensioners’ Association in the Guildhall Square on Monday.

There was also a vintage bus for residents to have a look at.

Cllr Jonas said: ’It was very funny because Nell was more interested in having a cup of tea than the champagne.

‘Having a free bus pass means freedom. It means pensioners don’t have to be stuck indoors, they can get out and about.

‘If you time it right the sky’s the limit – you can go just about anywhere with it.’
