A traffic lights malfunction caused roads gridlock in Fareham today.

Managers at the Romanse traffic control centre said the fault in Gosport had held up drivers using the A27 and M27 trying to get into the town through Fareham.

The fault was fixed at around 9am but long delays remained, including on the A27 westbound from Portchester.

Romanse said there were moderate delays on the M27 westbound between Portsmouth and Fareham.

One of the drivers affected, Mark Cox, said: ‘It took me nearly an hour to get from the top of junction 11 down to Newgate Lane and the A32.’

And Alison Couchman said: ‘I ended up going the long way round to get to work, down The Avenue and Longfield Avenue. It’s ridiculous!’
