EMERGENCY gas works have forced the closure of the eastbound carriageway of a major Portsmouth road.

Workers have shut the A27 Western Road in between Southampton Road and Northarbour Road eastbound.

One eastbound lane of the road had been closed off at the end of last week for works, but today the entire carriageway was blocked.

A driver reported queuing traffic for around 15 minutes at Northern Parade and London Road, Hilsea.

Diversions are in place. Signs at the closure say the road will be shut until Thursday.

Tony Jefferson, manager of City Wide Taxis, said taxi passengers were experiencing delays with five minute journeys taking around 20 minutes instead.

He said an accident on the M3 this morning has also had a knock-on effect.

‘The gas works have caused a bit of a hassle this morning, and that is on top of the usual problems drivers face across the road system in Portsmouth,’ Mr Jefferson said.

Bosses from Southern Gas Networks and Portsmouth City Council are currently having a meeting about the situation.
