PORTSMOUTH lifeboat crews recovered an unmanned boat spotted floating in the Solent.

An RNLI crew was called to retrieve the drifting six-metre rigid inflatable boat, which had broken its moorings.

It was discovered with no-one on board, floating one mile to the east of Horse Sands Fort.

The report came in at just after 7am on Sunday morning and a 15-minute search started when the lifeboat arrived on the scene.

Despite light fog and poor visibility, the lifeboat Norma T found the unmanned vessel with its steering column covered and main power turned off.

The boat was towed to Langstone harbour and was handed over to the harbour master so he could try and trace the rightful owner.

The RNLI lifeboat was stood down and returned to its station at around 9am.
