Update: M27 reopens but long delays after crash causes rush-hour chaos

Police today reopened a section of the M27 closed after a crash.

The early morning accident at Junction 3 left a driver with serious injuries.

Police closed the westbound carriageway at the M271 link after the accident, leading to major rush-hour delays.

It was reopened just before 8am but hour-long queues were expected to continue for some time.

It invoved a Mercedes Sprinter van and a Nissan Micras, the driver of which - a man in his 30s - suffered serious injuries.

Queues soon built up back to Junction 5 and beyond as diversions were set up around the M271 slip roads.

Police say the man hurt in the accident, which happened at around 4am, was taken to Southampton Genral Hospital.

They said they expected the road to remain closed until at least 8.30am.
