POLICE are reported to have talked a distressed man down from a motorway bridge in Portsmouth.

The M275 into the city was closed in both directions after drivers reported that they had seen a man who had climbed over the railing on a bridge on the motorway late last night.

Police confirmed that a number of officers were at the scene but would not give details.

Witnesses close to the scene said that officers were talking to a man standing near the edge of the bridge.

Reports said police stood guard and closed the underpass on the Rudmore roundabout whilst a negotiator spoke to the distressed man.

He eventually climbed back over the railing and was walked an awaiting ambulance at just after 1.40am today.
