POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a pedestrian was hit by a car and injured.

The accident took place the outskirts of Newport on the Isle of Wight and left a 25-year-old man from Southsea with bruising.

Officers were called at 1.09am on Sunday to a report of a pedestrian injured in a collision with a car on Long Lane near the junction with Buckbury Lane.

Inspector Martin Goodall said: ‘Initial enquiries suggest the car failed to stop at the scene, but it could be the driver did not realise a collision had occurred.

‘I am appealing for any motorists who were travelling on Long Lane at around 1am on Sunday to contact police if they saw a man walking along the road or think they may have hit something or someone.’

Anyone with information is asked to call Shanklin police station on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
