TRAFFIC police are appealing for witnesses after a car crashed into railings by the side of a road.
The 76-year-old driver of a green Ford Focus hit the footpath railings at the junction of Weevil Lane and Mumby Road in Gosport.
As reported yesterday, it happened at around 3.20pm on Sunday.
A 77-year-old woman who was sitting in the back seat was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham with life-threatening injuries.
She is now in a critical but stable condition.
Firefighters had to remove the roof of the car to free her.
The driver of the car and a 17-year-old girl who was sitting in the front passenger seat are both uninjured.
A 27-year-old pedestrian was also left with minor injuries.
Both the pedestrian and the 77-year-old passenger were taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham.
Officers from the Roads Policing Unit at Fratton police station have launched an investigation into the crash.
The road was closed for nearly four hours while specialist officers conducted a detailed examination.
Traffic police want to hear from anyone who might have seen the crash.
They also want to speak to the driver of a grey or silver car travelling north on Mumby Road when the accident happened.
Anyone who saw the crash should call Sergeant Mark Weller from the Fratton Roads Policing Unit on 101, quoting Operation Shantung.
