PORTSMOUTH’S most celebrated music festival was launched in style over the weekend.

Visitors to Port Solent were treated to performances from Portsmouth City Training Band and Portsmouth City Band, as well as music from soloists, including pianists and guitarists.

The event on Saturday marked the launch of Portsmouth Music Festival 2012.

The action does not begin until next February, but organisers have already released their syllabus, detailing the hundreds of classes that are available to enter.

The deadline for entering the majority of classes is November 11.

Gwenda Dearsley, chairwoman of the festival committee, said: ‘There’s been a lot of people walking past, listening and enjoying the music.

‘It’s been a very nice atmosphere. The next festival is our 80th. We are hoping it’s going to be a bit special and we are having our final concert in The Kings Theatre.’
