A man was cut from his car after a crash which left part of a busy Portsmouth road closed this morning.

A Volkswagen Passatt, driven by a woman, and a Daihatsu Cuore, driven by a man, collided on Holbrook Road, near the junction with Lake Road, in Fratton, at 9.09am.

Firefighters from Southsea station used jaws of life to cut the roof off the Daihatsu, and free the trapped driver.

An ambulance took him to Queen Alexandra hospital in a spinal brace.

The woman was also taken to hospital with a suspected neck injury, but did not need neck support.

The road was blocked while the work took place, and remained shut for almost an hour, reopening at 10am, after the council's road maintenance company Colas had cleared the debris.
