IT was a close-run thing, but a team from the University of Portsmouth’s marketing department won an annual staff sports day.
The team, called Follow the Reader, amassed 151 points to pip rivals We Work Out with 149 points and the Incredibles, who had 142.
The event, held at Ravelin Park, included egg and spoon, sack and three-legged races and a tug-of-war.
More than 200 people in 20 teams took part.
Organiser Joel Ryder said it was one of the few occasions when staff from different departments came together.
He said: ‘It’s the only chance we get where teams from, say, marketing meet environmental sciences, and play teams from mathematics and university admissions.
‘It’s also an opportunity to give everyone a bit of a pat on the back.’
Profits will go to charity Brain Tumour Research, which is based at the university.
Pompey legend Alan Knight was there to present awards to winners.
He said he was delighted to be part of the event.
‘It’s raising money for a good cause and great, particularly for me, as I received an honorary masters in science from the uni.’
It was the sixth time the staff sports day has been held.
