A male cyclist has been taken to hospital this afternoon with ‘potentially life-threatening’ head injuries after coming off his bike on a busy Portsmouth road.

Police closed off part of Sultan Road in Buckland after the incident shortly before 1.45pm.

An ambulance spokesman said the man’s injuries were thought to be serious and potentially life-threatening, and he had been flown by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital.

Eyewitnesses have told The News they believe a man had come off his bike while cycling along the road, and was being helped by ambulance staff.

A police spokesman said the road was closed at both ends.

There were not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.
