FIREFIGHTERS are still working at the scene of a major fire at a recycling centre in Hilsea.

Three pumps are still at Shawcross Industrial Park, off Ackworth Road, following this morning’s blaze.

The crews are making the site safe and an investigation on what caused the fire is due to start tomorrow morning.

Firefighters from across the area attended the blaze at 8.44am. Thick, black smoke could be seen from across the Portsmouth area.

A spokeswoman from the fire service had earlier advised for people to avoid the area. It came as people drove to the fire to have a look, getting in the way of the crews.

Police closed the road to stop people getting too close to the fire and smoke.
