THE eastbound carriageway of the M27 has reopened following yesterday’s fatal crash.

The collision, between a car and a lorry near Junction 9 at Whiteley, left one person dead, and brought traffic on the motorway to a standstill for much of the day.

The eastbound carriageway of the M27 remained closed overnight, as work had to be carried out to resurface the road.

The Highways Agency has since tweeted during the night to say: ‘#M27 J8-J9 has reopened following the earlier accident vehicle fire and subsequent resurfacing thanks for your patience.’

In addition to the person who lost their life, seven other people were examined by paramedics following the crash, which involved several vehicles.

A man and a 19-month-old baby passenger sustained minor injuries.

Police investigations continue, and anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to call 101 and quote Operation Shornmead.
