IT was a day for romance, richly deserved.

Loving couple Gary and Gaynor Haigh enjoyed spending Saturday being pampered thanks to winning The News’ Valentines competition.

Gaynor, 62, from Moody Road, Stubbington, near Fareham, wrote into our Love Is In The Air competition explaining how her 71-year-old husband had been her rock while she underwent a liver transplant in 2010.

She had contracted hepatitis C in 1976 following a blood transfusion and the huge operation was a terrifying time for the whole family.

Her story touched our judges who sent them to Port Solent to be enjoy a swim at David Lloyd leisure, a massage at Three Sixty Health & Performance, followed by lunch at Rimjhim.

In the afternoon they watched Les Miserables at The Odeon and had afternoon tea at The Watermark Bar.

Mr Haigh said: ‘I remember watching Gaynor in her usual chair writing something out.

‘I asked her what she was doing but she said it was a surprise.

‘It was actually our story.

‘When we discovered we won it certainly was a surprise!

‘We’ve had an excellent time. The massage was fantastic.

‘It’s lovely to spend time together, very romantic.

‘Everyone we have met has been so nice and we would like to thank everyone for making the day so special.’

At Rimjhim Indian restaurant staff pulled out all the stops to make the meal special.

Owner Abdul Rob, said: ‘I think it is very romantic. I read their story and was really touched by it. They are a lovely couple.’

The Haighs’ children and grandchildren were just as delighted for them.

Mrs Haigh said: ‘I didn’t dream I would win. The whole family think it is wonderful and everyone went out to buy the newspaper to see us in it.’
