A devoted group of volunteers from Portsmouth have been shortlisted in the PDSA's annual Volunteer Awards for their outstanding passion and commitment to the charity.

Volunteers at the North End PDSA charity shop, which raises vital funds for local sick and injured pets, are up against two other teams in the coveted Retail Volunteer Team of the Year award.

The group of 19 give up their free time to help at the busy store on London Road, and many often work extra shifts at short notice to ensure the smooth running of the store.

North End PDSA store manager Jan Grigg, who nominated the team for the award, said: 'I would be lost without the help and support of my wonderful volunteers. Everyone works extremely hard to help keep the store looking immaculate and making our customers feel welcome.

'Whether it's helping in the stock room, sorting and pricing the donations, or serving customers on the till, everyone always gives a hundred per cent to every task they are set.'

The winners will be announced in the new year.
