THE clear-up operation is under way after a huge blaze at a scrap metal depot in Portsmouth.
Fire ripped through the European Metal Recycling Ltd depot, in Dundas Spur, on Sunday.
Around 50 firefighters pumped up to 15,000 litres a minute of water on the burning 500-tonne pile of crushed cars and metal.
The blaze created a plume of smoke hundreds of feet high, with its core reaching a temperature of more than 1,000C (1,832F).
Residents posted pictures and videos online of the fire, which could be seen for miles around.
