FIREFIGHTERS who were called to a blaze at a barn containing 160 tonnes of potatoes are expected to remain at the scene into tonight.

Six fire engines from Fareham, Portchester, Eastleigh, High Town, and two from Gosport, plus a water tender from Fareham, were initially sent to the barn in Brownwich Lane, Titchfield.

The call came in at 11.48am and firefighters used two compressed foam jets and two main jets to put out the flames in the barn, which measures at 20m by 60m.

The cause of the fire is unknown and there are no injuries.

However firefighters are expected to stay at the site until late this evening and possibly into the night to ensure the fire does not reignite.
