THOUSANDS of blockages have played havoc with the area’s sewer network.

Southern Water has revealed that items such as wet wipes and sanitary products have caused more than 11,000 blockages.

Just this year there were 326 in Fareham, 221 in Portsmouth, 197 in Gosport, 193 in Waterlooville, 141 in Havant, 119 in Southsea, 52 in Emsworth and 29 in Lee-on-the-Solent.

The firm warned that people’s homes can flood with wastewater.

It wants to remind people only to flush human waste and toilet paper down the toilet.
