A GROUP that cooks hot meals for the elderly and lonely people could be forced to close.

Lee Carers is in desperate need of cooks to help once a week.

Every Monday the group arranges and cooks a hot meal at the Bulson Hall in Lee-on-the-Solent. It has been providing the service for around 40 years.

Currently a small team of volunteer cooks take it in turn, working one Monday in four, to cook a meal for around 24 people. Work starts at around 9am and finishes about 1pm.

Aleck Hayward, chief cook for the group, said: ‘We have always managed somehow with the cooks we have. But we now have people approaching the age restriction of 80 for working in the kitchen.

‘We desperately need to find more volunteer cooks to fill the gap. If we don’t we might have to stop the service.’

People attending the meal are collected from home and taken to the hall to enjoy a two-course meal.
