A CHARITY which helps people in need has called for more volunteers to join its ranks.
The group, called YOU, is based in Fareham and provides care, support and advice services to vulnerable people across the Portsmouth area. YOU’s business writer Abi Davis said the charity had about 30 volunteers and was hoping to recruit more.
Ms Davis said: ‘Around Portsmouth we help people with enduring mental illness, young homeless people and we provide a free legal service to the public.
‘Our volunteers are a great asset to us and we’re always pleased to have more on board.’
Ms Davis said the charity also needed people to join the board of trustees.
She said: ‘The trustees sit on board meetings throughout the year, support the management team in making important decisions, and review policy and procedures.
‘We are in particular looking for people with a strong background in marketing, finance or human resources.’
Ms Davis said YOU was founded in 1985 and had expanded to offer services across Hampshire.
Among the services run by YOU is the Advice Portsmouth centre in Kingston Crescent.
Advice Portsmouth manager Jane Henderson said volunteers supported professional staff who offered advice on legal issues, debt, benefits, housing and employment.
She said the centre attracted a mix of young and old volunteers.
‘Some of our volunteers are retired, but quite often young people do volunteer to get something on their CV and build their skills, which is lovely,’ she said.
‘We’ve even got at least three people here who have done volunteer work and then gone on to do paid work for us.’
