THOUSANDS of pounds were raised as a former serviceman walked 72 miles for a good cause.

Army veteran Alan Elliot walked from Southampton to Brighton and raised more than £3,000 for charity Help for Heroes.

Members of local army regiments decided to walk with him through the towns, which saw him pass through Portsmouth on Saturday, June 21.

Mr Elliot, 58, said: ‘My favourite part was getting into Portsmouth and being greeted by the Lord Mayor.

‘He is a wonderful, kind man and it made my day to see him greeting me. I plan to do other fundraisers but not this challenging.’
