HARD work has paid off for a former Warsash Maritime Academy trainee.

David Barfoot, 36, has won the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s officer trainee of the year award.

Mr Barfoot, pictured, was presented with the award by shipping minister Robert Goodwill in a ceremony at the Clothworkers’ Hall in central London.

He said he was thrilled to have won the award.

He said: ‘It’s a complete surprise and very humbling.

‘I would just like to dedicate it to all of the lecturers who taught me at Warsash Maritime Academy.’

Mr Barfoot is now a Merchant Navy marine engineering cadet.

He said: ‘My main motivation for getting into the industry would be the pride upon being asked by a stranger, “What do you do for a living?” to be able to answer “I’m a marine engineer in the Merchant Navy”.’
