HOMES were without water in Gosport and the surrounding area after a valve failed.

Portsmouth Water said there was a fault with a control valve in Redlands Lane, Fareham, which had shut.

Neville Smith, managing director, said that has now been fixed.

But the valve shutting has led to two water mains bursting between the piece of equipment and Hoad’s Hill.

Parts of the A32 have flooded as a result of this, Mr Smith added.

He said: ‘We’re doing our best to get on top of it.

‘As a result of this (equipment failure) two mains coming down from Wickham have burst.’

The valve that failed controls water in and out of the area.

Workers opened two bypass valves to bring in water from other areas.

People had reported low pressure and water being cut off in Hill Head and Stubbington, as well as Gosport.
