A CLOUD of smoke filled a busy road as a derelict house was set on fire in a suspected arson attack.

Eight fire engines were called to the blaze in London Road, Cowplain, at about 1.45pm yesterday.

Ralph Hutton, Waterlooville watch manager, said: ‘On arrival the building was well alight. It was a dangerous scenario for firefighters as a lot of floor boards were missing.’

Firefighters tackled the blaze from an aerial platform.

Eye-witness Liam Smith, 16, said: ‘You couldn’t see down the road because of smoke.’

The house belonged to the late Victor and Irene Pyle until four years ago. Their daughter Linda Marsh said: ‘It’s very upsetting.’
