LETTER OF THE DAY: The fly-tipping blight

Have your say

FOR 135 years The News has prided itself in keeping you up-to-date with all the best news, sport and information from across our area.

And from next month we will be working even harder to make sure that what’s happening in YOUR community is in your favourite daily paper.

Within the last 12 months we have carried out two major pieces of reader research looking at what you want from The News, what you think we should be covering, what we do well and what we could improve.

The great news for all of us working on the paper is the high regard you have for the quality of our coverage of news and sport.

Among other areas highlighted were the offers and competitions we run, our coverage of the local entertainments and leisure scene, the debate our letters pages provoke and the fact that we regularly publish positive stories about the good things that happen in our area.

But, of course, there is always room for improvement and so we are taking your thoughts on board.

We know at the end of the day you want good old-fashioned news and views which is local to you. So our focus has been to look at ways we can bring more stories from the communities where you live. We will be increasing the amount of local news and views from the communities in your circulation area – whether that is in Portsmouth, Fareham and Gosport or Havant and Waterlooville.

This additional news will be backed by a daily ‘Community Views’ column in which we invite you to give us your thoughts on the issues that matter to you.

We have enjoyed getting out to one of the mainstays of our communities – the neighbourhood pub – as part of our Love Your Local campaign and we will be doing the same with a new page in celebration of schools across our area.

We will also be printing more pictures from the events we cover every week to get more of your faces on the pages of the paper.

Our coverage will go down to the local details that you want to know about, from the return of our daily court round-up to the addition of information on local planning applications.

And our sports team will be covering more of the grass roots stories you have to tell us about.

By listening to what you had to tell us we will also be making other improvements to content throughout the paper – including expanding our popular nostalgia page across two pages.

Remember The News is All About You. If you have thoughts on what you would like to see covered in the paper contact me at editor@thenews.co.uk or by post at The Editor, The News, The News Centre, Hilsea, Portsmouth PO2 9SX.

CONTACT US

OUR team of local news reporters work hard every day to bring you the stories you want to read about.

But they can’t know EVERYTHING that is happening on their patches... and that’s where YOU come in!

We’ve spent time over the summer talking to community groups, clubs, societies and other leading figures in your area to let them know that we remain committed to covering their stories in The News.

These people have told us they are happy to send us regular updates on any news – whether it’s a big story they want us to look in to, an event they would like us to cover or simple snippets of community news.

The more people we have feeding us this information the merrier.

If you want to join our team of community contacts and play a part in what appears in your paper then let us know. Email The News office closest to you from the list below and a reporter will be in touch:
