A Gosport gym is hosting a 48-hour weightlifting challenge in aid of Help for Heroes.

Don Styler’s Physical Training Centre in Monks Walk is holding the event, which starts at midday today and goes on until Sunday.

The aim is to lift the weight of Type 45 destroyer HMS Daring, which weighs 8,000 tonnes.

Participants will be in teams and have set weights on different apparatus in the gym.

They will be on a station for an hour, lifting weights constantly and a running total will be kept to get to the target.

All sponsorship and entry fee will go to charity.

Military charity Help for Heroes is a cause close to chief instructor Matt Styler’s heart.

Matt was in the Army and was shot in the leg while on duty in Afghanistan in 2011 and received support from Help for Heroes in his recovery.

He said: ‘I would like to repay Help for Heroes for the help they’ve given me.

‘This is the first event I’ve organised since the injury and I hope to do more events in the future.’
