SAWDUST at a furniture factory exploded, causing a family to flee their home in terror.

A loud explosion was heard from the 50ft tower of Morgan Furniture, in Clovelly Road, Southbourne, at 1.30pm yesterday.

Gail Hart and her children fled their home fearing the tower, which is at the bottom of their garden, would fall.

Mrs Hart, 41, said: ‘I heard a loud rumble as if a train was going past and then the kids ran in from the garden screaming the factory was on fire, call the fire brigade.

‘I went out and could see flames shooting up 30ft from the extraction unit at the top of the tower. I called 999 and got the kids, the chickens and the rabbits out of the house straight away because I didn’t know what was going to happen next.

‘It was very scary.’

Crews from Chichester, Havant, Emsworth and Southsea managed to get the fire under control and a spokeswoman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said the fire began in a sawdust silo.

Morgan Furniture did not respond to calls from The News.
