FREE electric blanket tests are being offered to avoid fires this winter.
West Sussex firefighters are once again urging residents to take up the tests at selected venues across the county.
Sessions will run from Monday, October 22 to Friday, October 26 at venues including Chichester and Littlehampton.
Jackie Boyle, community fire safety officer for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, said: ‘Last year 184 of the blankets we tested had a fault or were over 10 years old.
‘Such a high number really highlights the value of getting them checked regularly.
‘Every year, nationally, there are around 1,000 fires caused by unsafe blankets and sadly, many people are injured and some even killed.
‘The elderly can be especially vulnerable so before the cold weather sets in we are urging people to take up a free test and give themselves and their families the peace of mind of knowing their blanket is safe and that they will be sleeping more safely at night.’
Booking is by appointment only and people can call 01243 642124 to find their nearest venue.
All have disabled access and times are 9.30am to 1pm and 1.30pm to 4.30pm for all venues.
The sessions are October 22, at the Tamarisk Centre, in Beach Road, in Littlehampton; October 23 at the Marriott Lodge, in Tollhouse Close, Chichester; and October 24 at the Burgess Hill TC Help Point, in Church Walk, Burgess Hill.
