THIS pub was named in honour of the 1st Duke of Wellington Arthur Wellesley, whose home on London’s Hyde Park Corner was called Apsley House.

A colourful painting above the door of the pub, in Auckland Road West, Southsea, shows the famous house, which was commonly referred to as Number One, London.

And similarly, the Southsea pub proudly bears the title Number One, Portsmouth, above its doors.

Apsley House is now a museum, art gallery and part-time residence of the current Duke of Wellington.
