TALENTED artist Samm MacKinnon has picked up a national award for an aqua-themed masterpiece.

Samm, from Widley, has been named category winner in the BBC Wildlife Magazine Artist of the Year 2012 competition.

She emerged winner of the Beneath the Water category with her image of a butterfly fish called Flit, Fly Float.

It is the second year running she has won the category and her artwork will be published in the August 2012 issue of BBC Wildlife Magazine.

She said: ‘In my paintings I try to take the viewer on a journey in the tranquil waters of the ocean.

‘Butterfly fish are so colourful, they are among my favourite tropical fish and feature in almost all of my work. I wanted to capture the sunlight filtering through the water, catching a shoal of butterfly fish in its delicate rays, against the deep blue sea.’

Her work will be showcased at the Marwell International Wildlife Art Society exhibition at Rookesbury Park Manor, Wickham, from September 14 to 16.
