FIREFIGHTERS painstakingly cut a woman free from her car after she crashed into a tractor on one of the main routes into Portsmouth.

The 50-year-old was left with serious chest injuries after she slammed head-on into the farm vehicle in Northern Parade, Hilsea, shortly before noon.

The collision closed the roads in both directions for hours – with officers still working to clear the damaged vehicles from the highway.

Firefighters from Cosham rushed to the woman’s aid, along with police and paramedics.

They cut away the roof of her white MG, leaving debris from the car at the road side.

She was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital where she is understood not to be in a life-threatening.

The driver of the tractor was left shaken but not hurt by the collision.

Police confirmed that no-one had been arrested.

The road was expected to be cleared by 3pm.
