A WOMAN was taken to hospital after a van hit a lamppost in Portsmouth last night.

Police, paramedics and firefighters were called to Goldsmith Avenue at the junction with Milton Road at 10.35pm yesterday.

The van had hit the kerb and crashed into a lamppost and the female passenger had to be removed from the vehicle by firefighters.

She was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham, but South Central Ambulance Service could not give details about her injuries.

The male driver was taken away by police for questioning and remains in custody.

A total of 14 firefighters were at the scene.
