Members of Lee-on-the-Solent Women’s Institute have hosted a party to celebrate the institute’s centenary.
It was an informal occasion where members took part in a variety of activities – including playing games, taking part in quizzes and reciting poems.
President of Lee-on-the-Solent WI Evelyn Love said: ‘There have been countless parties to celebrate 100 years of the WI in this country and Lee-on-the-Solent was certainly not to be outdone.
‘Members enjoyed home-made cake and sandwiches and wore hats in memory of the days when ladies were never without.’
The group’s longest serving member, Anne Portet, shared her memories and experiences of the group.
Between them, Gosport and Lee-on-the-Solent have eight WIs.
The Lee-on-the-Solent WI has been running for 88 years and is the oldest in the area.
Mrs Love, who has been a member for 16 years, joined the group after retiring.
She said: ‘I cannot imagine staying at home doing nothing.
‘The WI is truly life-inspiring and keeps me young.’
Celebrations have been taking place all over the country to mark the WI centenary.
As a result, the organisation has seen an increase in membership throughout the UK.
Mrs Love said the Lee-on-the-Solent group had also seen a rise in membership.
She said: ‘Our event was a great success and as a result brought more members into our group.
‘We are always looking for new members.
‘The aim is to encourage more younger women who will bring in new ideas.’
Mrs Love said that she was proud that the WI had been running for a century.
She said: ‘The fact that the WI is celebrating 100 years proves how vital the organisation remains to women in the local community, as well as all over the country.
‘The WI is a central part of British history and our culture. We hope that it will continue to be so for years to come.’
